Skincare Tips & Tricks #7 - Controlling Oily Skin

Oily skin is a big problem for everyone, even those who don't have acne. It's a very frustrating issue sometimes, especially if you wear makeup.
I have VERY oily skin, & i was a firm believer that nothing could control it. I have tried A LOT of things, but i finally found something that was able to reduce the oils in my face by a ton! & so here they are:

1. Simple Oil Balancing Face Wipes / Oil Absorbing Sheets

I have recently found these wipes and they are AMAZING! I used to use have the normal ones, but whilst getting new wipes i found the oil balancing ones, and thought i'd give it a go.

It managed to mattify my face for a good 2-3 hours. I recommend putting these into your bag and whenever you look or feel oily again just give your face a wipe & you're good to carry on with your day.
Now, if you wear makeup wiping your face with wipes isn't ideal because you'd have to do your makeup again so the best alternative are oil blotting/absorbing sheets:

All you do is dab your face with them to get rid of excess oils & your makeup doesn't get ruined. You can also use blotting sheets even if you don't wear makeup. I find them easier to bring around with you because they are the size of a business card and they don't take that much room, unlike the wipes. Although i refer the wipes better, it's up to which is more convenient.

Another tip: if you wash your face every morning like me, but you don't have time to- just give your face a quick wipe with the wipes and you're good to go!

2. Milk of Magnesia

If you already know what Milk of Magnesia is you are probably wondering 'how on earth is this this going to help my skin?!'

I was a bit thrown back by this too when i saw a video on it but it really does work! You can apply this in 2 ways:

After washing your face in the morning, just rub it into your skin or use a cotton ball and just swipe all over the face. After this you might be left with white residue. If so, don't panic! That's just how it is.
Once you've done either you can go ahead and just apply your normal moisturizer on top. This will get rid of the whiteness and completes the step.

Notice: This is not only an oil control remedy but is also a primer!

I've been using this for about a month now and it controls my oils so well! I still get a tad oily but it managed to prevent any major oiliness that i used to have. It controls for a good 5-8 hours.

It is also very affordable (i bought mine in boots for £4+), and you get a lot in the bottle!

3. Fight Oil with Oil

The reason our skin is producing more oil is because we don't have enough. Moisturizer is good in compensating for lost oils but it isn't enough. This treatment might take a long time (up to 3 months) to finally pay off, because we all have different skin, but it is definitely worth it in the long run. If we use oil on our skin to moisturize after we wash then your skin will finally realize that it doesn't actually need to produce any more oils that it should.

I personally use bio-oil, & i tried it in the past but my skin started to get mini spots so i stopped using it. About 7 weeks ago i thought i'd give it another go and it is doing great for my skin. I only use it in my night routine and use the milk of magnesia in the mornings. I did, however, use bio-oil this morning but it doesn't really matter which one you want to use. You don't have to use both Milk of M & oil at the same time (one in the morning & one at night) but i feel like that is a good combo to use.

Alternatively you can use Tea Tree oil instead of bio-oil if you already have it.

After using both M of M and bio-oil, i've noticed that my skin doesn't produce as much oil as it used to when i don't do anything to my skin. It's still a lot of oil but not like in the past. I believe that if i continue on my skin will improve drastically- oil-wise and acne-wise because bio-oil, or ever tea tree oil are good supplements for pimples. Bio-oil also has many other beneficial outcomes: gets rid of scars, evens skintone, keeps skin young, and more.

Caution: When applying oil to the skin you don't want to apply it on like moisturizer because otherwise your skin will become wayyyyy to oily and it can lead to blocked pores = pimples. Just 1/2 drops of oil on your palm and gently rub your hands together just to spend it (i say gently because you don't want the oil to absorb in your hands, you want it in your face). Then just apply and gently rub all across face.

If you do decide on using bio-oil in the mornings- oil control depend on how you skin reacts to it for the first time but it controls my oils for a good 6-9 hours. It all depends on the day really, if it's scorching hot, cold, if i'm doing a lot of errands, or if i'm just on the computer all day :L

5. Toner

Toner can have a drying effect on the skin which help control oils. This is because Toner is mainly used for acne and it helps prevent or get rid of acne by drying the spot or area so that pimples don't form. You apply after you wash your face, before you moisturize.

You can also spray it onto your face whenever you feel or look oily to help control oils for longer throughout the day.

6. Minimizing Pore Face Masks

If you've read my #6 tips and tricks on pore care then read the section about pore minimizes so i don;t have to repeat myself :P but another major reason for oily skin are large pores. So if we make them smaller then less oil will come out.

Moisturizers & cosmetics:

ALWAYS get oil free cosmetics. I know i said to fight oil with oil, but in this case it's not a good idea to get oil based products because the oils in makeup and moisturizers are very different than from actual oils like Bio-Oil.

If you can, get non-comedogenic products also (they don't clog pores)

& that's it! :D that's all i have to share for the meantime (: If you have any questions feel free to comment below & if you are going to try some of these out let me know how it goes aswell in the comments.

Happy caring <3
